November in Ireland has a lot going for it if you're a writer. The clocks have gone back, the evenings are dark by five, and the weather gives you every excuse to stay in with a pot of tea and a blank page. It's no surprise that so many people pick this month to finally write the novel they keep talking about.
The challenge has been around for over twenty years. Most people knew it as NaNoWriMo. The organisation behind it closed in 2025, but writers kept the tradition going, and now plenty of us call it Novel November. The goal hasn't changed: 50,000 words of a new novel between 1 and 30 November.
I have already written about how to write 50,000 words in a month. This time I want to give you something more practical: a day-by-day, week-by-week 30-day novel writing plan you can actually follow, and the one tool I'd use to keep it all on track.
How the 30-Day Novel Writing Plan Works
Fifty thousand words divided by thirty days is 1,667 words a day. That's about an hour to ninety minutes of writing for most people, less if you write in short, focused bursts. The plan below is built around that number, with two tweaks that make a real difference:
- Bank words early. Week one is when you're fresh and excited. Write a bit extra and you'll thank yourself in week two.
- Build in catch-up days. Life happens. A birthday, a late shift or a bad cold can wipe out a day. The plan leaves room for that.
Before you start, set yourself up in Story Bible Studio. It's free, it gives you a calm place to write, and it tracks your word count, targets and writing streak automatically, so you never have to tot up numbers in a notebook again.
Before 1 November: Your Prep Week
Spend the last week of October getting ready. You don't need a full outline, just enough to keep moving:
- Write your premise in two sentences.
- Sketch your main character: what they want, what's stopping them and how they'll change.
- Jot down five to ten key scenes, including your opening and a rough ending.
- Pick your writing times for the month and block them out like appointments.
Put all of it into a story bible in Story Bible Studio, so your characters, plot beats and notes sit right beside your manuscript. Digital space for writers to plot, plan, and build better stories. Designed by writers for writers. Your final draft awaits.
Week 1 (1–7 November): Ride the Excitement
Daily target: 2,000 words. Week total: 14,000.
This year, 1 November falls on a Sunday, which is a gift. Use that first day to get well ahead, even 3,000 words if you can. Don't edit, don't reread, just keep going. In Story Bible Studio, set your monthly target to 50,000 and watch the dashboard climb. Seeing the number move is surprisingly motivating.
Week 2 (8–14 November): Get Through the Slump
Daily target: 1,667 words. Running total by day 14: about 25,700.
Week two is where most people stall. The opening rush has worn off, the middle of the book is murky, and doubts creep in. This is when short writing sprints save you. Set a timer for 25 minutes, write without stopping, take a five-minute break and go again. Story Bible Studio gives you the space to sprint without distractions, and your word count updates as you go.
If you're stuck on what happens next, open your plot beats in your story bible and write towards the next one. Even a rough bridging scene counts.
Week 3 (15–21 November): Push Through the Middle
Daily target: 1,667 words. Running total by day 21: about 37,300.
You've passed halfway, and that's worth celebrating. This is a good week to raise the stakes in your story: a reveal, a betrayal, a plan falling apart. Interesting problems make the words come faster.
Keep a "fix later" list in your story bible. When you notice a plot hole or decide to rename a character, write it down and keep moving forward. Going back to edit now is the fastest way to lose a week.
Week 4 (22–28 November): Head for the Ending
Daily target: 1,667 words. Running total by day 28: about 49,000.
Start writing towards your ending, even if you haven't reached it in order. Many writers find the last week the easiest because the finish line is in sight and the story's threads start pulling together.
Days 29–30: Cross the Line
Target: whatever's left, plus a celebration.
Use these two days to catch up or to write the final scenes. When your Story Bible Studio dashboard ticks past 50,000, stop, breathe and tell someone. You've written a novel draft in a month, which most people only ever talk about.

Work full-time? Try the weekend-heavy plan
November 2026 has 21 weekdays and 9 weekend days. Write 1,200 words on weekday evenings and 2,800 on Saturdays and Sundays, and you'll finish on about 50,400. Story Bible Studio's target and live word count make it easy to see whether you're on pace, whichever plan you choose. For more ideas, read how to write a novel when you work full-time.
Why I'd Use Story Bible Studio for the 30-Day Novel Writing Plan
You can do Novel November with a notebook or a basic word processor. But a month-long sprint puts pressure on three things: your time, your count and your memory of your own book. Story Bible Studio takes care of all three:
- A space to write. A calm, distraction-free manuscript editor with chapters, so you can open it and get straight to work.
- Sprints and targets. Set your 50,000-word goal, write in focused sprints and let the Studio keep score.
- Live word count and streaks. The dashboard shows your total, your progress and your writing streak at a glance.
- Your whole story in one place. Characters, plot beats, storylines and world notes live beside the manuscript, so you never lose time hunting for a detail.
- Write with friends. Set up a writing group and run your own word count challenge with a leaderboard.
- Ready for December. When you're done, export your draft to PDF, DOCX or EPUB and start revising.
The free plan covers everything you need for the challenge. And if you'd like a lighter warm-up before each session, try adding a few lines to a shared story on Chain Story Online.
